Palermo has 30 years of experience, including 13 years as a C-level executive, including leadership roles at public companies with annual revenues ranging from $600M to $2.2B and raised approximately $1B in private and public equity while helping create over $12B in shareholder value. Led and participated in the successful acquisition and integration of nearly a dozen private and public companies in the networking industry valued at over $3B. He has significant experience in executive management at a number of digital media, networking and communications companies including Portola Networks, CEO; Procket Networks, COO & CFO & Corporate Secretary; Extreme Networks (Nasdaq:EXTR), CFO & Corporate Secretary; Metawave Communications (Nasdaq:MTWV), COO & CFO and Corporate Secretary; and Bay Networks (NYSE:BAY), V.P., Finance.
As a Private Equity Executive in Residence for a middle market private equity fund and a Business Advisor for early stage Venture Capital firms he has evaluated and identified opportunities to improve numerous Networking, Internet Services, Mobile Internet and Content Delivery businesses through new product introductions, improved business execution, operational efficiencies and plans for expanding into new distribution channels, deploying new business models and selectively pursuing acquisitions.

Portwood is an experienced industry veteran and has been in the financial services industry for over 15 years. Portwood is the Chief Compliance Officer and Chief Financial Officer of 38 Degree Advisors in addition to his role as Chief Executive Officer of Financial Industry Consulting Associates, LLC. FICA provides compliance, operational, and training services to broker/dealers, investment advisers, and for entities providing services to the financial service industry (i.e. law firms and marketing firms).
Prior to starting FICA, Portwood served as Chief Compliance Officer from approximately September 2004-July 2007 for Capital Investment Group, Inc. (BD), Capital Investment Brokerage, Inc. (BD), Capital Investment Counsel, Inc.(IA), and CIC Advisers, LLC (IA), collectively supervision and supervisory systems of the firms. Capital Investment Group, Inc. and Capital Investment Brokerage, Inc. offered a wide array of brokerage services and products. Capital Investment Counsel, Inc. and CIC Advisers, LLC were investment advisory firms offering clients portfolio management, separate account management, and financial planning services. In this role, he was responsible for the overall compliance for the firm, including serving as the firm’s Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Officer.
Prior to joining “Capital Investment Companies”, Portwood served as an examiner with the NASD district office in Atlanta from December 1998-August 2004 rising to the position of Field Supervisor. In this position, Portwood was responsible for conducting audits of broker/dealers, conducting financial surveillance, and serving as a liaison to broker/dealer firms.

Carvell has more than twenty-five years experience in the technology sector working with companies transitioning from private, development-stage start-ups through periods of rapid growth and initial public offerings to multi-billion dollar revenue public companies. His background reaches across mobile software applications, data and storage networks and semiconductor market segments.
His broad range of financial experience provides valuable perspective in analyzing and managing an enterprise. Responsibilities have included financial planning and analysis, corporate finance, M&A, investor relations, treasury, resource planning, as well as industry analysis and market research. For much of his career, Carvell has been engaged in business planning and valuations for strategic transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, and valuation of common stock for purposes of satisfying the requirements of Section 409A of the Internal Revenue Code.
Carvell has assisted companies with their business planning, market analysis and analytical modeling for total cost of ownership and product pricing. Additionally he has provided analysis of company capitalization and enterprise valuation. Clients include Cisco Systems, Procket Networks, and the portfolio companies of a number of Silicon Valley venture capital firms, as well as the industry research firm Dell’Oro Group where he was responsible for managing their Storage Area Network market research program and analysis of access network subscriber trends.
Carvell received his M.B.A. from University of California, Berkeley and received his undergraduate degree in Management Science from University of California, San Diego.
